AOM THREE

Nine Months

It took nine months to write a new post. maybe blogging isn't for me.
I'm preparing for a show at a great new gallery in Milwaukee, Jessica and Cassandra own The Armoury Gallery. I'm happy to be showing work during July and August there. The opening will be on gallery night, July 25th. i have added their beautiful website to my links on the right column.
As far as the work goes, it has shifted some what in motivation. I didn't like the Asian inspired paintings I made last fall. I struggled with them. so I'm making more. I like these better, they are raunchy, raw and less thoughtful. they are on wood. this was challenging. but i love how they feel like collectible antiques. I'm looking forward to contributing to the ever growing Milwaukee art scene

River Arts Show

New work will soon be seen at the River Arts Center Gallery in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. I will have three large scale, brand new paintings on display along with 5 or 6 other recent paintings. The show will run from October 25th thru December 9th. The opening will feature some good conversation, refreshments, and maybe a gallery discussion. The show is titled "casual luxury. REDEFINED." It will feature paintings I have done over the past 2 years based on fashion and culture explorations along with images of wildlife, old japan, and modern living situations.

The River Arts Ceneter is connected to Sauk Prairie High School. I look forward to showing work most likely not seen in this setting. It is all very large scale work and done with a contemporary feel. I hope to encourage younger artists to think about why work like this is made in a world were instant gratification is king and fine art painting is very often called dead. The gallery is very large and open and my work should fill it nicely. I'm lucky to be able to have 2 great venues to exhibit work in one year. Postcards and invites will be out soon.

I needed some strong coffee on Saturday morning. Friday nights event was a great time. Many thanks need to go out. We had a packed house with plenty of food beer and wine to consume. We had a bunch of crazy street people come in as well which is always entertainting. Im not sure wheater the Onion review lured them in or the food table that we mistakingly put right by the big main window. Either way, it was hilarious to talk with these people all night. Jessie and Mary did an incredible job pulling off the food table, Layla and Wesley were great hosts, staying till we drank our last high lifes. And tons of supporters came to see the work, Thanks to all that came out on the warmest night of the summer so far. I look forward to hearing more of how the work was received but it all seemed positive, thanks again. If you have time and missed the opening, the show will be up through July 13 th @ Drunknbutterfly. Ill be posting tons of pictures in a new album documenting the opening and the 13 paintings that were in the show, in case you aren't in Madison to see it yourself.

I've narrowed the show down to the work i want to show, there will be 7 to 11 paintings in the show, all very small marketable, collectible paintings. the biggest being two canvases that are 3 or 4 feet in height and 2.5 feet wide. i just need to frame and varnish a few things and its a go, hope to see you there

Update

Spring is here. Finally. But because of that, I have to throw down the obligatory "I'm so busy!" thing. It seems like I write a new blog entry every two years. Sorry for the absence. Work is just hammering the shit out of me. Actually its hammering the shit out of everyone. My number one art critic is tied up with all sorts of school stuff and Im tied up with all sorts of bike stuff, we never see each other. Things could be worse, in the middle of 45 hour work weeks, I am stacking up paintings for two shows that are lined up. If there happens to be time after those obligations, Im working on my cycling tan. I continue to laugh at everyone complaining about the gas prices as i push my 39:16 to work everyday. My morning and after work commute is a necessity for me. It starts and completes my day in an unspeakable way. I could talk about bikes forever. I get paid to. pretty nice.

Commission work has been taking up all of my time when I'm not at work. But it is nice, as my benifactors do pay well. This will make all my ebay searching for those campy track hubs worth while, Jessie's pretty sure Im obsessed. Either way, I feel I'm a very selfish artist, making work strictly for myself and my own obsessions, but I do feel a little relieved to make some work that is, for the most part, brainless. I don't have much attachment to the images and making work just to please someone other that myself reminds me why I make the work I do. I think I might paint a portrait of Judge Mathis next.

As soon as this commision mural work is rapped up, I can get back to the upstairs studio to hammer out the paintings Ive been marinating on for weeks. I have about 5 smaller canvases almost or completely finsished and I have a series of 8 or 9 paintings thath I'm just dieing to start. I'm going to introduce some sweet muscle cars and samurai images along with the wild animals. My goal here is to speak more about the relationship between the sexual fantasies and reputation that is attached to high end fashion and lifestyle.

'I'm really looking forward to this summer. Ive recently been lucky enough to be offered an exhibition at drunkenbutterfly this June. My work really fits in well with this place. Ive been admiring their space for some time now. It is run by a great couple from the west coast with deep roots in fashion and modern art. They have some great shows with contemporary work as the back drop of some down right hip ass clothes and footwear. Check them out if you're on the east side. Im looking forward to packing their place in the middle of June with a bunch of paintings and tons of food, drink and friends. Looking forward to seeing you there, more details soon.

They have great stuff there. Fashion and modern art in madison all in the same place? seem crazy? crisp, clean atmosphere, super cool store front. they are having an opening showing works by craig metgzer on saturday from 7 to 10pm. aomthree sheets to the wind

Now that the holidays are over, Im getting back to the studio. Ive been creating some bigger works in the basement and slowly working some detailed stuff in the upstairs studio. I have lots of excitement about the current body of work as im seeing some good things happen. im concentrating on turning my large scale work into smaller, more marketable pieces. its harder than i thought to scale down 8 foot paintings into 2 foot paintings, all while keeping the same feeling. Ive been also thinking about shooting my own images again, attached is one of the reference photos of marko for the large scale work "Birds Know Everything". You can see the slide and some details of it in the "Cool is a Label" album. if you know of anyone who would like to help out and be shot for a painting, let me know. im thinking of hiring some models, but all i could pay them with is a painting. so if you have extra wall space we could make a deal.

right now im looking a lot at klaus wanker, check his work out. visually we have a lot in common, i admire his work,  i posted a link to the right. I also updated the "New Work and Motivation" album, included is a circular wedding gift i just finished.
